Application Sectors

The most important Fields of Activity where ISE operates are as follows:

Electronic equipment and subsystems for Aerospace and Defence

ISE has been operating in this sector since its incorporation, and many of its senior engineers possess more than 20 years of experience in this field.  Most significant activities in this area are related with design and manufacturing of microprocessor equipment for real-time data acquisition, storage, handling and processing, and for control of weapon systems and subsystems. Engineering activities include, as a standard, full design validation and documentation according to DoD and MIL-STD, as well as other applicable regulations.

All ISE personnel is properly qualified and trained for dealing with sensitive Customers' information, therefore the most professional service may be provided in this respect.  If and where necessary, “Real-Time” software development activities are conducted in accordance to “saftey-critical” standards and regulations, including full documentation according to most demanding reference standards (DOD-STD-2167, ESA Software Engineering Standards, and so on).

Among most important activities in this field:

  • Elettronica delle unitą “Rotor Brake Control Panel” units for EH101;

  • Torpedo Control Unit for MU90 weapon system of EH101 and NH90;;

  • Fully automated testing systems for on-board avionic equipment; Integration “Test-Rig” set-up and development for “Fly-by-Wire” aircraft;

  • Solid State Nonvolatile Memory Unit for “MU90 excercise version” mission data storage;

  • Naval Launching Network Equipment for “Ammiragli”, “Maestrale” and “Garibaldi” class of Italian Navy;

  • Fiber-optic Communication and Auxiliary/Safety data handling electronic boards for “Black-Shark” torpedoes;

  • Presetting and Launching Networks for Underwater Countermeasure Systems for “U209” “U212” and “U214” class submarines, and NATO Naval Ships.

On-board Equipment and Systems for Advanced Transports and Railway Applications"

ISE has been working on behalf of all most important italian rolling stock manufacturers since 1995, by designing and manufacturing microprocessor control equipment for on-board plants and systems (Doors, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Toilets). Moreover, ISE has recently developed some complete modular solutions for implementing low cost on-board diagnostic, monitoring and communication systems for Mass-Transit cars and vehicles.

The above On-board Monitoring and Diagnostic System Architecture ("OSIRIS" system) represents the most important product in this area. The OSIRIS system implements a modular, flexible architecture which enables to configure a complete diagnostic and monitoring system for Mass Transit cars and vehicles. Its architecture includes standard interfaces for connecting other on-board microprocessor equipment and plants, based on most used vehicle and train bus standards (LonWorks, CAN, TCN, etc..). Monitoring and Diagnostic systems manufactured by ISE have been installed on board of Mass Transit vehicles built by Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie S.p.A. (today AnsaldoBreda S.p.A.) on behalf of Transport Authorities of Boston and Atlanta (USA).

Among the most significant activities in this field:

Equipment, Systems and Software for Industrial Automation and Process Control

 ISE includes among its activities both the design and development of custom solutions for automation and process control applications, and the engineering of innovative solutions for implementation of New Products and Services for its Industrial Customers.

 Among the most significant products in this field it is worth mentioning the computerized system for dimensional diagnosis of vehicles, marketed  with the brand name “GDS”

 Research & Development Activities and Services

 ISE devotes a significant part of its financial and human resources to the conduction of Applied R&D activities, undertaken both for internal purposes, and on behalf of third parties following requests from its customers operating within different application areas. Besides maintaining internal capabilities and tools at the current state of the art, the scope of such R&D activities is mostly related with the development of innovative product solutions, as well as with improvement of existing products. Following its effective organisation in this respect, ISE was recently included in the official list of qualified R&D Laboratories, issued by the Italian “Ministry of University and Scientific/Technological research”. Following the above, Companies that subcontract R&D activities to the ISE Research Laboratory (Laboratorio “ELETTRA” per l’Elettronica in Tempo Reale) may receive funding for such activities according to the applicable Italian laws (Art.14, titolo IV del Decreto 8/08/2000 per la concessione delle agevolazioni di cui al DL. N.297/99).

All activities conducted by the “ELETTRA” Laboratory are based, as well as other activities undertaken by ISE within other mainstream application areas, on the strong corporate “Core Competences” in the fields of “embedded” real-time hardware and system design, software engineering and integration, and full-scale system validation.

Moreover, ISE possesses a specific experience in the design and implementation of "Intelligent" control, data mining and classification algorithms based on so-called “Soft Computing” technologies, including (Hardware and Software) Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic and Evolutionary Computing.

 Among the most significant R&D Projects conducted by ISE Laboratory:

  • Feasibility study for application of embedded “Fuzzy” and “Neuro-Fuzzy” control algorithms to ill-conditioned mechanical systems for robotic applications
    Associated Contract ESPRIT – Parallel Computing Initiative – CAPRI Initiative – SubProject “ELECT” – Subproject No. 9452 94 195 70 (1995);

  • Design and fabrication of an embedded Analogic Neural Network on a prototype ASIC for the implementation of “Fuzzy” and “Neuro-Fuzzy” control algorithms (continuation of the ELECT Project).
    ESPRIT 3 – “MEPI” Initiative – Microectronics for SME – Progetto dimostratore “INCONTRO” – Contract CE n.7500 Subproject “DIM 109”
    The above Project obtained the First “Design-In Award” (1996 edition), yearly assigned by the ASSIPE Italian Association “Associazione Italiana delle Aziende di Progettazione Elettronica” to the best Italian Project in the field of Applied Microelectronics.

  • “INTESA” Project (ESPRIT IV Project No.25254), “INTElligent Sensors Application” aimed at the development of an innovative prototype of Artificial Olfactory Device (often called “Artificial Nose”) using advanced “soft-computing” techniques for data mining and classification.
    This project, that was headed by ISE and included an Industrial partner from Germany and three academic entities from Italy and England, lead to the implementation of the first prototype of the “ISENOSE” system, suited for Quality Control application in food and packaging Industry. The ISENOSE system comprises a dedicated Hardware Device as well as a complete software package and procedure, is being sold in close cooperation with the Company “SOATEC”, a Spin-Off Company from the University of Parma.
